Calculate the number of hours you need for weekly house cleaning

If you've never had a cleaner or housekeeper before, it can be hard to estimate how many hours of weekly house cleaning help you will need to get through your to do list. We've listed the most popular tasks performed by our Moncierges - AKA housekeeping nanny extraordinaires - each week alongside the average amount of time each one will take.

How many hours will you need for weekly house cleaning?

1. Tidy (average: 1hr)

A tidy means making things look neat. This generally consists of changing your bins, picking up clothes and toys from the floor, wiping tabletops and surfaces, doing the dishes/loading the dishwasher, and so on.

A Housekeeper and Moncierge will do this as part of their weekly house cleaning, but the average cleaner won't. For a cleaner, you'll need to take the time to tidy before they arrive so that they can clean properly.

Depending on the size of your home, the typical tidy will take 45mins – 1hr. Once in a while, you may like your Moncierge to reorganise the kitchen drawers or pantry, in which case we suggest adding an extra 45min per task.

2. Weekly house cleaning (average: 3–5hrs)

Although mtime is not a professional cleaning service, we're still happy to help where we can to advise on what weekly house cleaning options may be best for you.

We know every house is different, but as a general rule of thumb: each bedroom you have will mean an extra hour of cleaning.

For example a 2 bedroom home will require 2hrs of domestic cleaning, a 3 bedroom home will need 3 hrs and so on.

A domestic clean includes general cleaning, wiping of surfaces, dusting, sweeping, mopping and vacuuming.

Detailed cleaning will usually take about 50% more time than a domestic clean. For example, a 2 bedroom home will require 3hrs of time for detailed cleaning.

Detailed cleaning means attending to cleaning tasks that won't be necessary on a weekly basis such as us cleaning the oven or fridge, wiping blinds or cleaning walls. When you need those areas cleaned we suggest adding an extra 45 min per task.

Here are a few examples of the difference between domestic cleaning and detailed cleaning:

Domestic clean: general dusting V Detailed clean: individual items cleaned

Domestic clean: wiping kitchen surfaces V Detailed clean: cleaning kitchen appliances and under the sink

3. Laundry (average: 1–2hrs)

This category includes washing, folding, drying, hanging or ironing as needed.

Depending on the machine settings, one average one load/dry takes up to one hour. Hanging, ironing and folding can take 15–30 minutes depending on load size.

Changing linen can take up to 30 mins for 4 beds and making beds usually take up to 10 mins per bed.

4. Cooking & Meal Prep (average: 1–2hrs)

We require our families to provide recipes and ingredients for cooking, so that it's easier for our Moncierges to cook something that you'll like.

On average, for a meal prep (e.g chop up veggies, weigh and prepare ingredients for the meal) can take 30–45 minutes.

Time spent cooking varies; a simple meal – e.g. macaroni and cheese may take as little as 20 mins, while a family meal or baking, could take up to 1/1.5hrs.

5. Chores and Errands (average: 30min – 1hr)

Our Moncierges can do grocery shopping and errands such as walking pets or watering plants for you as well. Many housekeepers can also do this. However, the time required for errands and chores varies greatly, for instance grocery shopping can take 30mins–1hr depending on the distance to the grocery store and how many items you need.

You can also ask your Moncierge to do drop offs and pick ups from school. Here the time will vary according to the distance of your home from the school, the method of transportation and potential traffic encountered.

6. Child Care

This is a task our Moncierges can perform whenever you may need them to in addition to weekly house cleaning and other chores or tasks. However, for safety reasons we do not allow our Moncierges to multitask when it comes to child care.

If any childcare is involved during a visit, that time needs to be entirely spent looking after the kids and nothing else. Every minute of child care/babysitting will have to be directly added to the total hours you need. The same can be said if the session was originally intended for housekeeping, but you need to leave the home for a brief period. If your Moncierge is left alone with your child with no other adult supervision present, then their attention will focus on the child and the housekeeping tasks they were due to complete will be postponed until you return.

Task List Example:

    An example for a three hour session could be:
  • Load washing machine: 10 min – (run for 60 mins)
  • Cooking a meal: 45 mins
  • Clean stovetop: 10min
  • Hang washed clothes in the airer: 15min
  • Set up table for dinner: 10mins
  • School pick up: 30min – with the school to a 10 mins walk
  • Play with children: 60 min

For Moncierges, task lists are not set in stone! You can mix and match tasks as you like, make sure you swap tasks that require the same time so that your Moncierge will be able to finish them within your session time.
